Upgrade

I am loving the trend of low budget films doing unique stuff to kick ass. Lack of funds spawns creativity and Upgrade is oozing with awesome camera work and fight design.

Think of it as a spiritual successor to robo-cop. A man is crippled in a car accident where thugs murdered his wife. His life is ruined until a chance contact with an eccentric tech developer provides a way out. A little AI system is installed in his neck, allowing him to walk again. But that little AI can do more than help him walk. It can think, it can fight for him, and maybe make a few too many decisions on its own.

The plot is meh and the acting is also nothing to write home about. But the action is fun, fast, and well-filmed. The tech is unique, like a guy reloading a gun that is inside his arm, or sneezable nano-bots.

Brutal action is the name of the game. If you’re not into it, stay away.
