It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Season 13)

I’m a season behind on America’s longest running, most offensive sitcom.

And 13 is a real grab bag of good and meh. The strengths of the season are mostly Rob McElhenney’s god like transformation to a total hunk, and the gang’s absolute rejection of it.

The rest is just some so-so attempts clearly hampered by a large absence of Dennis (Glenn Howerton being busy with AP BIO).

Overall, it would be one of their poorer seasons…until the final episode.

A lot has been said about this episode already. The glorious coming out of Mac as a gay man. But not just his coming out, his struggle to be recognized as a person by the father whose attention he’s craved for the entire show.

It’s a beautiful incredibly choreographed dance number that completely undermines everything Always Sunny has been about. And the brilliant reaction of Danny Devito, “I get it. I really get it.” If you watch nothing of this show, watch this episode. A subversion of itself in a way that only Always Sunny could.

Season: 2 out of 4 stars

That episode: 4 out of 4 stars
