Zach Galifianakis is so funny it’s a shame he’s most often put in creepy, off putting roles. Between Two Ferns, based on the wildly successful funny or die show, walks that line carefully. Knowing that it is a ridiculous premise, and that encounters with celebrities are the main draw.
When Zach accidentally kills Matthew Mcconaughey (for a few seconds) Mr. Will Ferrell sends him across the country to get 10 celebrity interviews in one month. IF he does, he gets his own network talk show.
Celebrities like Jon Hamm, Tiffany Haddish, and Paul Rudd get the Ferns treatment (i.e. insulted to their faces) and it’s telling that the absolute funniest part of the film is the end credits. Where they run the bloopers of these same celebrities unable to hold it together. And neither can Zach.
The film is fun overall, a decent distraction punctuated by sick burns. But only if you’re bored and need something to watch and not think about.
